Penn State Berks International Thanksgiving Dinner and Gala to be held Nov. 16

The Penn State Berks Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee will hold its annual International Thanksgiving Dinner and International Gala on Wednesday, Nov. 16, in the Perkins Student Center Multipurpose Room. The International Gala is a celebration of the different cultures represented by the student body and will include a student fashion show, cultural dance performances, and desserts from around the world. This event is open to Penn State Berks students, faculty and staff.

Photographer Matika Wilbur shares portrayal of Native Americans, Nov. 7

Matika Wilbur, a visual storyteller from the Swinomish and Tulalip Peoples of Coastal Washington, will present her photography, which portrays contemporary narratives of Native Americans across the U.S., on Monday, Nov. 7, in the Penn State Berks Perkins Student Center Auditorium. This event is free and open to the public.

Shaffer’s book on Caribbean transnational history has modern implications

A new book written by Penn State Berks Professor of Latin American Studies Kirwin Shaffer explores how historical forces, people, and ideas traveled across political borders and bodies of water to shape Caribbean history. Titled "A Transnational History of the Modern Caribbean: Popular Resistance across Borders," the book discusses many of the same issues that are timely today, including same-sex marriage and LGBTQ+ rights.

New book examines gender on legal response to domestic violence

"Gender and Domestic Violence: Contemporary Legal Practice and Intervention Reforms," a new book edited and authored by Brenda Russell, professor of psychology at Penn State Berks, and John Hamel, licensed clinical social worker, practitioner, researcher, and editor-in-chief of the journal Partner Abuse, presents empirical research findings and reform recommendations for prosecutors, criminal defense attorneys, policymakers, and intervention providers with the aim of rectifying shortcomings in legal and law enforcement responses to domestic violence.

Penn State Berks hosts ‘With Open Heart and Open Arms: LGBTQ+ Cuban Refugees’

Penn State Berks will host the traveling exhibit "With Open Heart and Open Arms: LGBTQ+ Cuban Refugees and the LGBTQ+ Community's Response to the Mariel Boatlift of 1980" in the Thun Library from 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 10, until Oct. 17. The exhibit is sponsored on campus by the Penn State Berks DEIB Committee, The Rainbow Alliance student organization, and the Thun Library.

Penn State Berks Unity Day slated for Oct. 7

Penn State Berks will hold its annual Unity Day celebration, the largest diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) event at the college, from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7, on the Perkins Student Center lawn. This year’s theme is "Bring your home to Berks: Let's create our village." All Unity Day activities are free and open to the public.

Penn State Berks holds Latino Forum for high school students and community

As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, Penn State Berks will hold its 10th annual Latino Forum from 9:30­ to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 14, in the Perkins Student Center Auditorium. This special event is free and open to students from all Berks County high schools, as well as members of the local Hispanic and Latino community. There will also be a virtual option. Advanced registration is required.

Berks to present lecture by recently retired NFL linebacker Shaquem Griffin

Shaquem Griffin was born just minutes after his twin brother, Shaquill. Both boys went on to become remarkable athletes in high school and college at the University of Central Florida, and both have played in the NFL after being drafted by the same team — the only difference is Shaquem Griffin did it all with just one hand. He will share his inspirational story at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, in the Perkins Student Center Auditorium at Penn State Berks. This event is free and open to the public.

Penn State Berks launches Adult Learner Peer Mentor Program

In an effort to better serve its adult student learners, Penn State Berks has launched the Adult Learner Peer Mentor Program in the fall 2022 semester. The program seeks to enhance and enrich adult education by pairing seasoned and academically successful adult learners with incoming adult students.
